Animal guides

I did a meditation years ago based on some reading I’d been doing (Feeding Your Demons by Tsultrim Allione), and up came some highly anthropomorphized animal manifestations of my “demons”–my critics, my derailing cautionary babblers, my fears….

and, to honor them, I searched for totems… in so doing,  I stumbled across the stupendously fabulous animal photography of Sharon Montrose .

There I found my porcupine.

My vulture.

Alas, no crow, no raven.

Today I realized I no longer remember who was what. What were my demons? Who were my porcupine, my vulture, my crow? (See? even my demons are evolving!)

Instead of spending more energy resurrecting my old demons, I’ve decided to re-assign meaning to these creatures using more positive attributes (no longer demons, but guides), and embrace their energy into my current journey.

Crow for cooperation and ingenuity…for expression, voice, and community

Vulture for finding fodder where others might not, for taking advantage of opportunities, for the ability to be patient, taking the long view, the ability witness, and finally feast.

Porcupine for self-protection, the kind of protection that is visible *enough* so it does not need to be tested. This could be protection of the self, of dreams, of time, of resources, of hope….

How about you? What animals are calling you today?

wanting

this blog feels like a piece of cake put down at a party and now I am trying to find it among the piles of plates, and dirty glasses, a shoe, a turned up edge of carpet, the strangers asleep on the couch

real life means priorities that do not always include the things I like the most

this week, a sick child, a compressed work schedule, insufficient sleep and I am staggering around half blind, almost giddy, a little tender, and wanting very much to be here, writing, thinking, finding images that call to me… discovering how it all falls together.  instead I am rushing driving trying to get things done before deadlines happen, people fly away, time runs out.

Just wanted to admit to wanting.

More than a few nuggets of awesomeness in this recent TED talk given by the amazing Brene Brown:

This weekend I really, truly felt like I was in my zone– creating, gathering, thinking, discovering…. it wasn’t all gold dust and unicorns, it was thorny, non-linear, uncomfortable, but ultimately, very, very rewarding.

I want to feel like this more often– I want to feel like I did while I was planning the weekend campfire… like I did when I was writing and thinking and talking the online content… like I did while I worked on my project  and actually moved it forward in a positive way (YAY!)… like I did with every comment anyone made here or there letting me know they were along for the journey, working on their own projects in their timezones with their struggles and curiosities, successes and stumbling blocks.  How great to experience the energy of shared intention and effort while we all worked in the fabulously distributed concert made possible by the internet.

I love this stuff, it makes me very happy. Thank you to all who were able to participate, and I sincerely invite anyone else who did not drop by this time to think about it for next time. If you’re interested, please join the mailing list (upper right side) to get an email when the next campfire is in the works.

Closing campfire

Closing campfire was tonight. I had such a great weekend and sincerely hope that you’ll join me for the next one.
